Finally, the 2019 national budget has been approved and ready for implementation after President Rodrigo Duterte signed it on Monday, April 15.
Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea confirmed the good news to reporters in Malacanang. He added that the President vetoed a total of P95.3 billion items in the General Appropriations Act (GAA) under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The vetoed items include the contentious P75 billion ‘insertions’ by Congressmen which is “not part of the President’s priority projects.”
Senate President Tito Sotto also confirmed the signing of the enrolled 2019 GAA, which the President received on March 26.
“He vetoed the P75 billion that we recommended for striking out, plus P20.3 billion more,” he added, in a text message to reporters.
The government has been operating in 2018 reenacted budget after the Congress failed to pass the GAA 2019 on time. Senators and congressmen squabbled over alleged ‘pork’ in the budget.
